The DJs Guide to Facebook and MySpace

By DJ LamBo

At first glance, MySpace and Facebook have nothing to offer a DJ.  MySpace is great for musicians, and Facebook is the ultimate business networking tool.   Both are great for socializing.  But it can seem like they won’t do a bit of good for you as a DJ.   Well, I’m here to tell you that if you think that, you’re thinking wrong.

While MySpace and Facebook aren’t going to be the best places to broadcast your shows or offer mixes, they are a great place to attract new fans.  You just have to play your cards right and be a little smarter than the average Joe.

On MySpace, find musicians who play the same kind of music that you like to use in your shows.  For example, if you are a DJ who plays mixes of trance music, find groups on MySpace who play trance music.  They don’t have to be the big name groups.  You can find ones that are just starting out too, if you want.   Befriend these groups, then scour their list of friends.   There’s nothing wrong with adding people.  And if you don’t want to be considered spam, send a note with the friend request letting them know who you are and why you want to be their friend.

The same goes with Facebook.  Befriend your friends’ friends.  Remember that Facebook and MySpace are both networking sites.  Although there are a few people who won’t befriend anyone they don’t already know, I assure you that those people are the minority and not the majority.

As you build up your friends on both sites, keep your pages updated with your latest shows and updates.  Always provide links to your live online broadcasts and downloads of your mixes.  Brag about yourself!  Brag about your show.  If you broadcast a live show and 100 fans attend, make a big deal about it even if you yourself don’t think it’s such a big deal.  You want to make people believe that they’re missing the boat if they’re not listening to your mixes and attending your shows.   You want to use Facebook and MySpace to bring people to you and convert them into lifetime fans.

Tell all your friends and fans to attend your next live show online.
